Almost no one can make this glaze anymore.
You burn wood,
separate the ash,
sink it in water again and again to remove the bitterness,
dry it, crush it\u2014
only then does it become glaze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt takes too long.\u201d
\u201cIt\u2019s inefficient.\u201d
That\u2019s what people said,
and so many kilns abandoned the technique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But she knew
that within that inconvenience
lived the memory of fire and plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When she gently lifted the vessel,
it was still warm\u2014
as if the memory of the flame
remained inside the clay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom here,\u201d she whispered,
\u201cthe second fire begins its work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She lit the tabletop hearth.
Inside its amber-colored chamber,
a small flame rose softly.
Its light held a temperature
entirely different from the kiln\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When she placed the vessel beside the hearth,
the surface of the glaze began to shift.
Depending on the angle of the light,
the green deepened,
the gray softened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis expression\u2026
industrial glazes can\u2019t do this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hearth\u2019s flame illuminated
the tiny grains of ash buried deep within the glaze,
bringing forth the expressions
that had been hiding there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The kiln\u2019s fire creates the form.
The hearth\u2019s fire reveals the meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only when the two fires meet
is the vessel truly complete\u2014
and she realized this for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A faint shimmer ran across the surface,
as if the memory of the burned wood
had taken one last gentle breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFire remembers
the techniques that are fading away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She smiled.
The flame in the hearth swayed quietly,
and the glaze shifted once more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second fire
continued to softly illuminate
